The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued fresh guidelines on how the best runners-up in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be determined bringing clarity to a campaign affected by team withdrawals and uneven group sizes.
According to CAF, the four best runners-up across all groups will progress to a centralized continental play-off, which will decide which African nation earns a spot in the intercontinental play-off tournament.

The new system accounts for situations where some groups have fewer than five teams, ensuring fair comparison among all second-placed teams.
This update means that Uganda still has a chance to qualify for its first-ever World Cup appearance, depending on future performances and group standings.
