Ugandan music icon and Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) president Cinderella Sanyu, popularly known as Cindy, has voiced her concern over the current state of Uganda’s music industry, boldly claiming that “untalented people with money” are dragging it down.
Known for her vocal leadership and raw talent, Cindy didn’t hold back as she addressed the growing trend of financially capable individuals using money to force their way into the industry without the skill to back it up.
“What’s killing our industry is that Ugandans with money are often the ones who push their music forward, but they lack the talent to compete, especially on the global stage,” Cindy stated.
She explained that while money can buy studio time, music videos, and promotions, it cannot buy talent, and without genuine creativity, Ugandan music struggles to break international barriers.
The ‘Boom Party’ star also called on fellow artists to focus more on originality rather than mimicking Western trends, saying that excessive copying of foreign sounds has blurred the unique identity of Ugandan music.
“Foreign artists are good because they inspire us by introducing a new blend of sound. But the problem comes when we overdo it, leaving little room for Ugandan talent. We need to improve our sound to compete globally.”
As the head of UMA, Cindy emphasized her mission to uplift genuine talent, promote quality, and push for a Ugandan sound that can thrive both locally and internationally.
