President Museveni Says Government May Reopen Facebook After Four Years
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has revealed that his government is considering reopening Facebook, four years after the platform was blocked in Uganda. The President made the remarks on Sunday while meeting Gen Z youths at his Rwakitura farm under the ongoing Unstoppable Campaign.
Facebook was shut down in 2021 after President Museveni ordered a total closure of the platform. He said at the time that he had received intelligence reports showing that donors and People Power supporters planned to use Facebook to destabilize the country after the elections.

For years, negotiations between the Ugandan government and Facebook’s owners have failed to reach an agreement. However, Museveni now says his government is willing to reconsider the decision and explore the possibility of reopening the platform.
The announcement comes as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, with many youths and digital creators calling for the return of Facebook to support online expression, business, and media engagement.
