In a significant move aimed at honoring the service of former legislators, Parliament of Uganda has started covering burial expenses for former Members of Parliament.
The initiative was confirmed during a recent general assembly of the Parliamentary Pensioners Association, a body comprising MPs who served from Uganda’s first to tenth parliaments.
Under the new arrangement, the government will provide UGX 3.5 million to help cater for funeral costs whenever a former MP passes on.
While many retired MPs have welcomed the decision and consider it a step in the right direction, they also noted that it falls short of the broader welfare demands they have been pushing for over the years.
These include improved pensions, healthcare support, and other retirement benefits.
The move is seen as part of ongoing efforts to recognize and support Uganda’s former legislators in their post-political lives.
