President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have officially enrolled for the mass National ID renewal exercise, signaling the beginning of a crucial phase in Uganda’s identity management system.
The exercise comes as most of the current Ugandan National IDs, issued in 2015, are set to expire in 2025, following their 10-year validity period.
According to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), the renewal is open to all Ugandans, and the new IDs will come with enhanced security features and improved data accuracy.

The renewal process aims to ensure every Ugandan citizen remains legally identifiable for access to government services, voting, and other civil obligations.
Registration centers have been set up nationwide, and citizens are encouraged to update their details early to avoid last-minute congestion.
This national effort marks an important step in digital identity modernization and better public service delivery.
