President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has addressed the growing public concerns surrounding the new digital number plates and related traffic fines.
Responding to the widespread belief that the system is designed primarily for revenue collection, the President emphasized that the initiative is strictly aimed at enhancing national security.
“I saw some issue about the digital number plates, and fines.

That people are being fined for I don’t know what” Museveni remarked. “But the issue about the number plates is not about fines, it is anti-crime.”
He went on to stress that the digitized number plates, which are connected to a central command system, are a critical tool in crime prevention.

“You touch it and an alarm goes off, that’s their work,” he explained, noting that the technology allows security agencies to track and respond to incidents in real time.
Museveni also credited the country’s surveillance cameras for aiding in crime reduction and underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that no Ugandan dies due to “incomplete infrastructure.”
The President’s remarks come as Uganda prepares to roll out the mandatory digital number plate system nationwide.
