The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has suspended the US Green Card Lottery program, also known as the Diversity Visa Lottery (DV Lottery), following a deadly mass shooting at Brown University last week.
The tragic incident left two people dead. Authorities later identified the suspect as a Portuguese national who was found dead on Thursday. US officials revealed that the suspect entered the United States through the Diversity Visa Lottery program in 2017 and was later granted a green card.
According to American officials, the man was believed to be seeking the American dream after winning the visa lottery. However, the situation took a dark turn when he allegedly carried out the violent attack.

Following the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that the visa scheme has been paused under President Trump’s directive. She stated that the suspension is meant to review the program and prevent further harm to Americans.
“This action is necessary to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program,” Noem said.
The decision has sparked debate about the future of the Diversity Visa Program, which has for years allowed immigrants from selected countries to legally move to the United States through a lottery system.
