In a major shake up of U.S. foreign assistance, the State Department is officially taking over programs previously managed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) a move that experts warn could have devastating consequences globally.
According to reports, the restructuring aims to reorient U.S. foreign aid toward national interests, effectively ending USAID’s long-standing role in disaster relief, development, and humanitarian assistance.
“USAID will no longer be providing assistance to other countries” announced Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement posted on Substack this Tuesday.
Millions of Lives at Risk?
A new study linked to the announcement estimates that the funding cuts could contribute to millions of deaths by 2030, especially in developing nations that heavily rely on U.S. support for health, education, and emergency aid.
The decision has sparked concern among international NGOs, human rights groups, and health organizations who fear the collapse of essential global aid networks.
