The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has unveiled a modernized design for its meter-gauge passenger trains, showcasing sleek coaches painted in Uganda’s national colors.
The artistic preview represents a new chapter for the country’s railway transport, aimed at improving commuter services on key routes such as Kampala–Jinja.

According to URC officials, the modernization project is part of efforts to provide immediate transport solutions as the country continues constructing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The $2.7 billion project, led by Turkish engineering firm Yapı Merkezi, began work on the Malaba-to-Kampala section in November 2024, marking one of Uganda’s largest infrastructure undertakings.
The updated meter-gauge trains are expected to improve comfort, safety, and reliability for daily travelers while the SGR construction progresses.

Meanwhile, Ugandans online have welcomed the initiative, praising the design and renewed investment in local rail systems. However, many also urged authorities to prioritize the completion of the faster and more efficient SGR, which is expected to transform trade and passenger movement once operational.
The new design signals Uganda’s commitment to reviving its railway network and modernizing transport infrastructure in line with regional development goals.
