Several Ugandan musicians are expressing outrage after it emerged that Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz was paid a staggering UGX 750 million to perform at the Coffee Marathon event held in Ntungamo over the weekend.
Local artists feel undermined and devalued, especially since many have consistently supported and performed for the NRM government over the years often for far less.
They argue that awarding such a massive endorsement fee to a foreign artist sends a clear message that Ugandan talent is not appreciated at home.

The artists further criticized the government’s move as being contrary to the “Buy Uganda, Build Uganda (BUBU)” policy, which President Museveni frequently promotes.
Many now see the hefty payment as extravagant and out of touch, especially at a time when several sectors including the arts are struggling to secure adequate funding.

“This is not just about money. It’s about respect for our craft and our contribution to national development,” one artist lamented.
As the debate continues, there are growing calls for greater investment in Ugandan talent, especially for national campaigns and endorsements aimed at promoting Ugandan products like coffee.
