
New York City Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Ugandan-American state assemblyman, is making headlines across the world as he becomes the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City and the first Muslim ever to reach this stage in the city’s history.
In the Democratic primary, Mamdani leads former Governor Andrew Cuomo with 43% to 36%, a major surprise for many political observers.
“Tonight, we made history,” Mamdani told cheering supporters. “I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City.”
Born in Uganda, Raised for Global Impact
Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to the U.S. at age seven.
He went on to attend the Bronx High School of Science and later graduated with a degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College, where he co-founded Students for Justice in Palestine.
A Powerful Family
Zohran comes from a family of global achievers. His mother, Mira Nair, is an award-winning film director (Queen of Katwe, Monsoon Wedding), and his father, Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, is a respected scholar teaching at Columbia University and Kampala International University.
