Oxford Crown Court in the United Kingdom has today sentenced Lydia Mugambe, a Ugandan High Court judge and former UN Criminal Tribunals official, to 6 years and 4 months in prison for offences related to modern day slavery.
Mugambe was found guilty of exploiting a fellow Ugandan, subjecting her to forced labour under harsh and degrading conditions. In addition to the prison sentence, the judge has been ordered to pay over £12,000 (approximately UGX 60 million) as compensation to her victim.
The case has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s legal and diplomatic circles, as Mugambe had previously been celebrated for her human rights rulings and international legal service.
