The government of Tanzania has officially banned the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, citing reasons related to national security and moral standards.
According to a statement from government officials, the decision came after authorities discovered that the platform was being used to promote explicit content, which goes against the country’s cultural and moral values.
Additionally, the government revealed that several official accounts belonging to government institutions including the Tanzania Police were recently hacked.

These compromised accounts were allegedly used to spread false and inappropriate information, further raising concerns about the platform’s safety and impact.
As a result, access to X has been restricted across the country, with Tanzanian internet users now unable to open the app or website unless using virtual private networks (VPNs).

The government says the ban will remain in place until further notice or until the platform complies with local regulations.
This move has sparked mixed reactions among citizens, with some supporting the decision as a way to protect national values, while others criticize it as a step against freedom of expression and access to information.
