The Ministry of Water and Environment has addressed public concerns about the unpleasant smell coming from Lake Victoria, assuring residents that there is no cause for alarm.
In a statement released on April 4, the Ministry explained that the foul odour is due to the decomposition of algae in the lake.
As these algae decay, they release gases that are responsible for the bad smell being experienced by those living or passing near the water.
The government has promised to monitor the situation closely and continue working on environmental conservation efforts to ensure the health of Uganda’s largest water body.
