Prominent Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has passed away at the age of 80, while in India, where he was undergoing medical treatment.
Officials confirmed that Odinga collapsed during a morning walk and later suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to hospital, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
In line with Odinga’s wishes, sources say that his family and Kenyan authorities are working quickly to ensure he is laid to rest within 72 hours of his death.

His passing has sparked an outpouring of grief across Kenya and Africa at large. President William Ruto has declared seven days of national mourning, and a state funeral is expected.
Odinga ran for Kenya’s presidency five times, and though he never won, he remained a towering figure in East African politics, revered for his role in democracy, reform, and opposition activism.
