It is now nine years since the closure of WBS Television, also known as Wavah Television Service, a once-popular local television station in Uganda.
WBS Television was owned by the late billionaire Hajji Hassan Basajjabalaba Wavamunno. The station was officially shut down on December 14, 2016, following significant tax debts owed to the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
The closure left many employees jobless, marking a painful moment in Uganda’s media industry. Several journalists, presenters, producers, and technical staff were forced to seek opportunities elsewhere.

After the shutdown, WBS Television assets were placed under receivership and later sold off. The building that once housed the station was taken over by URA officials and eventually sold.
Today, the former WBS Television premises are home to NBS Television, symbolizing a major shift in Uganda’s broadcast landscape.
Nine years later, the memory of WBS Television remains strong among viewers who grew up watching its programs and among media professionals whose careers were shaped by the station.
